What are micro link extensions?
Micro-link extensions, specificially, the Milvali style are individually applied extensions with copper links and are reusable for up to a year! The sections are precise and the color-matched links lie flat so they are undetectable. There is no heat, glue, solvents, sewing or adhesive used in this method. The hair is custom ordered, for length, color & texture and can be worn for up to 12 weeks, I’ve included a picture so you guys can see exactly how they are installed!
My experience with extensions-
With a background in dance and cheer, I’ve worn extensions for years in the past. But, they were always clip in extensions and as much as I loved them, there were definitely some cons to them.
What I mean by this is, clip in extensions were great and all, but by the end of they day they would cause the biggest headaches due to the weight. With the Milvali method however, since its a 50/50 ration of your natural hair with the extensions, it feels weightless and some times I forget they were even in! I was skeptical at first, but after the initial installation, I was shocked. The only con in this is, I don’t think I could ever go back to clip ins!
How was the installation and grow out?
For me, I had 130 pieces of extensions installed and it took about 3 hours. Yes, this is a long time to sit in a chair but trust me, it was so worth it! Since these are individually attached with a 50/50 ratio of your natural hair to the extensions, it feels just like your hair and grows out with your hair! I had mine in for 4 months and the grow out was natural and healthy.
What about maintenance?
This was something I was super nervous about to be honest! Day to day, I like to keep my routine as simple and quick as possible! Between a full time job and blogging, there isn’t much time in the morning to get ready! These extensions did not change my hair routine whatsoever, if anything, it was quicker. I wash, condition, and dry my hair the same way I would if the extensions weren’t in! And since the extensions hold curls better than my natural hair, I ended up curling it less between washes and this ended up saying me time!
What about removal?
Removal was a breeze! There was no pain at all, they simple break the links and the extensions come right out. The only thing to note is that since the links hold the extensions to your hair, it also holds in your natural fall out. Don’t freak out, this just means all the hair that would normally fall out are just being held in by the links, so, when your take the links out, they all fall out at once! The upside to this? Your shower drain doesn’t get clogged every time you wash!
Where can I get them?
My extensions were done at the Milvali Salon, here in San Francisco. It’s a great salon that specializes in extensions but they also provide color and cut. The owner, Deb Monti even provides master work shops where you can come in to learn about these extensions and become certified as a stylist! You can find more information on this, here. Whether you’re looking to have them installed yourself, or a stylist looking to be certified, she is a great educator and I couldn’t trust her more with my hair and would highly recommend her and her team!
Ok, now how much will this cost me?
This is going to sound so annoying but…it 100% depends on what you are looking for. The extensions come in multiple lengths, the longer, the more costly of course. And it also depends on how thick you want them. I would recommend coming in for a consultation first before committing, this way, you can get a quote on how much it would cost you for what you’re looking to accomplish! For reference, my hair is long as is but I wanted a bit more length and volume so I had 22 inch extensions put in with a total of 130 pieces, my cost was around $1,500. This is definitely pricey but well worth it. I ended up loving them more than I thought I would so when my 3 month mark hit and it was time to remove or re-install, I chose to have them re-installed and moved up, this cost ended up being $700. When I am ready to have them removed completely, this can range from $50- $125.
I hope this helps and covers all your questions, but of course, if you have any questions I didn’t cover, please dont hesitate to ask!
Xoxo,
Lena
